Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park is situated on the southern coast of Kenya near Shimoni and south of Wasini Island in Kwale County near the Tanzanian border. Kisite Park covers 11 square kilometers (4.2 sq mi) while Mpunguti Reserve covers 28 square kilometers (11 sq mi). The Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park covers approximately 350 miles from Nairobi and only 55 miles from the coastal city of Mombasa.Â
The Kisite Island and Mpunguti Island were included as part of a group of protected reserves and marine parks in the 1970s. The Kenyan Government then established the Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park and Reserve in 1978. The body aims to protect dramatic coral gardens, scenic islands, and incredible marine habitats in the area. Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park is considered to be the most magnificent of all Kenyan Marine Parks. It covers an area of 39 km² and comprises four small islands surrounded by coral-reef.
