Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of Africa’s oldest rainforests and the largest forest in Rwanda, covering 1,019 square kilometers. It is a crucial watershed for the Congo and Nile rivers and hosts a rich biodiversity, including over 1,100 plant species, 345 bird species, and 85 mammal species, notably 13 primates.
Once threatened by poaching, illegal mining, and encroachment, Nyungwe’s fortunes began to change in 2020 when African Parks, in partnership with the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), began managing the park. The focus is on wildlife restoration, community engagement, and enhancing tourism for economic sustainability.
Accessibility:
Nyungwe Forest National Park can be accessed by road, air, or water transport, thanks to Rwanda’s well-developed transport system.
