Volcanoes National Park, located in northwestern Rwanda, encompasses 160 square kilometers of rainforest and includes five of the Virunga Mountains’ eight volcanoes: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. Initially established in 1929 as Albert National Park by Belgian colonial authorities, it was divided in the 1960s and later affected by poaching and civil unrest. In 2005, Rwanda introduced the annual Kwita Iziina baby gorilla naming ceremony to boost conservation efforts.
