The name Masai Mara is a Maasai phrase which means spotted Maasai plains. The plains are the savannah grasslands spotted with inselbergs, and green bushes.  It was first established in 1943 and degazetted in 1961. Masai Mara National Reserve is located on the Southern part of Kenya along the Great Rift Valley area. It’s within Narok County, about 80 kilometers from Narok Town. And about 250 kilometers from Nairobi. It is part of the larger Mara-Serengeti Ecosystem .The total area is 1510km². It is one of the most popular game parks due to its extra-ordinary high diversity and population of wildlife that include the big five.

Attractions

  • Wildebeest migration – over 2.5 million herds. This crossing usually occurs within the Mara-Serengeti Ecosystem between June and October. One can Witness the awe-inspiring spectacle of millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles embarking on their annual migration from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara. This spectacular event is a highlight for any safari enthusiast.
  • Over 2000 ungulates
  • The Big Five – Most tourists come to East Africa hoping to see the so called ”Big 5”, namely Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo.
  • Birdlife – up to 470 species of birds such as; Abdim’s Stork, African Darter, African Grey Hornbill, African Fish Eagle, African Harrier Hawk, African Openbill Stork, African Spoonbill, African White Backed Vulture, Bateleur, Green Wood Hoopoe and many others.
  • Other eye catching wild animals include: Common Eland, Bushbaby, Grant’s Gazelle, Dwarf Mongoose, Side Striped Jackal, Pangolin, Warthogs, stripped hyena and many others.
  • Habitats – They include the Savannah grasslands, inselbergs, acacia trees thickets, croton thickets and riverine forests.
  • Rivers – Masai Mara comprises on 3 rivers namely Mara River, Talek and Sand Rivers.
  • Olo0lolo/Siria Escarpment. Sandy soil and small bushes can be found in the east, the Siria Escarpment forming a spectacular plateau as the western border, lush grasslands and woodlands around the Mara River and open savannah in the largest parts of the reserve.
  • Balloon safaris. The balloon takes off at the break of dawn, around 6am, gliding silently during the ride over the savannah grasslands below where you may spot a variety of wildlife. The flight lasts an hour and concludes with a ”Champagne Bush Breakfast” at the balloon landing site in the wilderness.
